"Welcome back it is loaded and rolling. I'm your host Thomas Wasson, trucking expert here at FreightWaves. On the menu for today, is going to be talk about freight fraud. It's there, it happens, you need to know more about it because it is going to continue to happen now that there is more money in the freight cycle. Dont let folks fool you, there are more carriers out there therefore more instances of fraud. Joining us today to talk about it is folks at ITS Logistics. Help me welcome on Jered Snow, senior director of network operations at ITS Logistics. Jered, please to have you on and pleasure to talk to you. Tell us a little bit about yourself." says Wasson.

"Hey, thanks for having me on today. My name is Jered Snow, I have been at ITS Logistics going on 11 years now. I definitely had a journey at ITS. I have seen a lot of parts of the business starting as a broker and growing into managing our customer team and ultimately into my role as network optimization and network operations at ITS logistics. The freight fraud topic is definitely something I deal with daily and is in my job title and something that you constantly have to be monitoring. I really appreciate you having me on today." said Snow.

"As a fellow former network design person myself I can completely relate. We were very lucky at my asset-based carrier that though all of our trucks were company drivers, but I can't imagine the challenges that is when you want to optimize the network especially in the logistics space. Now you have to have the added complicity of making sure who you put on the lane is who they are." says Wasson.

"Absolutely and that starts with the true digital identity in today’s world. It's so crazy how much this industry is moving around and really knowing who you are working with. We carry so much value in our carrier relationships and our contactor process where we have a best in class vetting process and a best-in-class carrier relationships team. So we definitely take a higher priority in making sure who is hauling our freight and offer the best solutions to our customers and folks in the community, overall just supports the business ITS Logistics is doing." says Snow.

"Looking at that situation, the vetting process is always important. What are some of the things that go into it? Back in the day the challenge used to be is that you call and give your MC number or your SCAC, here is my insurance. I'm totally real, give me the freight. Now it is a little bit more complicated." sys Wasson.

"Yea I remember when I first started in the business, you used to get these big stacks of carrier packs they were called. I would enter in the information my self. Thankfully technology has come along, there is various platforms out there that do the vetting for companies. But it is very important for you to have a great time that puts in the rules and requirements because vetting platform that doesn't have the logistic that protects your business and is right for your business essentially could you put you in harm’s way. So, we are currently partnering with Highway and we use them for our onboarding and vetting process. they handle some of the automated insurance and all the other technology capabilities we use for on boarding our partner carriers." says Snow.

"That's kind of like the first step. That reminds me of an RMIS style platform so we get in, and let’s say we are going through Highway and I have got my carrier, I'm doing my thing. We are looking at now when we are in the system, are there any specific red flags that may be a little funky or weird? Is there anything weird as they say in that walled eco system and you have passed the first check, what are things folks may need to be aware of?" asks Wasson.

"I can point out a thousand different instances, associations, addresses, affiliations with other carriers. The focus is to understand who you are talking to on the phone. That can be done with reviewing Carrier411, looking at a platform like Blue Wire. Or just looking into the rule set by Highway has in place. What is unique about Highway is there is a two factor authentication.so they are asking..." says Snow.
